Another topic of the day – Story categories as per word limit
Write about your favorite song and memories associated with it
Writing about your favorite song is often difficult as you have many options to share. There is a list that is never-ending and feelings that are never controlled and emotions attached to every bit of the songs.
Songs have a lot of emotions associated with them. Sometimes, when you hear a song, you want to smile thinking about an old-age memory or feel sad because you shared that song with someone. Some songs make us remind who we are and some songs take us down memory lane to catch up with something forgotten long back.
My favorite songs are “You make me Happy”. The song reminds me of all the time that I spend with my family. It’s nostalgic and it has the happiness quotient that makes you feel light on your feet and you can enjoy your present moment by looking at your memories.
Another song is “Phir Se Ud Chala” from the movie Rockstar which is my favorite. It is a reminder that you can always get up and start fresh. This song lifts your spirit when you feel low.
There is a never-ending list of songs that we like but I will stop here to share another song that is close to me and that is a Bengali song “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay” by Rabindranath Tagore.
Which song is your favorite? Think about the songs that you listen to on repeat and never get tired of the lyrics. The lyrics and rhythm are everything. As we complete today’s challenge, we can move ahead to another topic of the day.
Story categories as per word limit
As a writer, we love to express our thoughts and various stories revolve around our minds. Writers like to create something new that keeps the readers tucked up with the thoughts to bring about action in the reader’s lives through their own experiences.
Every writer has their way of writing. Some like to keep it short yet meaningful and some like to be more descriptive. Your story can be as short as 100 words and as long as you want or is legible. Different terms have been assigned to the stories and each has a defined length.
Before we move to the story categories and their length, we need to know whether you want to create a fiction or a non-fiction story. A fiction story means that it is not true but based on imagination or inspired from our observations. For example, Sci-Fi movies. A non-fiction story means the details are true and the story too. For example, Autobiographies.
Below are different story categories that are based on word limit:
What is Flash fiction?
Flash fiction is a short story. I have categorized it separately because of the word limit. The word limit is anything less than 500 words. Flash fiction can be tough to write because you can ramble on for long while it is not an easy task to tell a story in fewer words. You have to be very precise with the message you want to give to your readers.
What is a Short Story?
We all love short stories. They depict a breathtaking lesson or experience in lesser words and readers who do not or cannot spend time on a novel, can enjoy the pleasure of completing a short story in a day.
Short stories are a friend for a reason. When we are stuck or our mind gets stuck, we all want a quick getaway and at that moment, we want to read something meaningful that needs less time to fill ourselves with motivation again.
The word limit for short stories ranges between 1000 to 10,000 words.
What is a Novelette?
A novelette is a long short story. It is a fictional story that can take up any genre and create stories that fall within the word limit of 10,000 to 20,000 words. Writers who are reluctant to write something more than a short story and less than a novel fall into this category. You can write novelettes and then when you are comfortable, move up to write a novella or novel.
Once you have mastered writing short stories, you can move up one step and start writing novelettes.
What is a Novella?
The novella is a short novel that falls into the word limit category of 20,000 to 50,000 words. Since it is shorter than a novel, it can focus on a central idea and involve a single main character and multiple supporting characters. Writers can create a series of a story.
The novella is the knock at the door and you won’t open it. It means that once you cross a bit of the word limit of the novella, you enter inside the door of completing a novel. Someone who does not make the novel a target often opts for a novella.
What is a Novel?
The novel is when you write out of imagination or inspired by your observations around your surroundings. Novels are narrative and deal with detail and keeping the readers engrossed for a longer time. They are lengthy and it feels like a journey to read a novel. Novels are fictional and novels that are non-fictional uses techniques similar to fiction to depict their true story which is purely based on facts.
The legible word limit for a novel is above 50,000 words to 1,00,000 words. It can go up even more with the word limit.
I hope the post on the Story categories as per the word limit helps you get going on your journey as a writer. You can start small but it will still be a start.
